Top 5 Bar Names of the Week

Author: Kim | May 28, 2010 | Top-Bar-Names

Woo-hoo- holiday weekend, everyone!

Before you head off to chill out or party for summer's inaugural weekend, we've got this week's top five bar names. Which one's your favorite?

  • Country Style de Luxe (White Chocolate with Cinnamon, Real Gold Flakes, Flower Mix and Raspberry) Definitely sounds fancy...

  • Kickin' cherry (Dark Chocolate with Sour Cherries, Anise, Nougat and Bourbon Vanilla)

  • I'm in Love... (Milk Chocolate with Colorful Chocolate Dragées, Sprinkles, Rice Crispies in Chocolate Coating, Mini Cookies and Peanut Butter Drops) I think I am, too...

  • meowwwowowowhissss (Milk and White Chocolate with Hazelnut Brittle, Sprinkles and Rice Crispies)

  • Chocolate Starbucks (Milk Chocolate with Cappuccino Chocolate Drops and Coffee) Mochas are awesome, but they're never quite chocolatey enough. Maybe this will do the trick.

Are you sitting on a great idea for a one of a kind bar? You can explore the many possible chocri combinations here if you think your chocri creation is a contender for next week's top 5.

Here at chocri, we work hard daily to use our chocolate powers for good, not evil.

Of course, not everyone's chocolate intentions are for the better, and most importantly, not all toppings are good toppings. We thought bacon and gold flakes were fairly exotic, but then we read a news story earlier this week about a man flying into JFK from Medellin with a strange souvenir. When customs officials examined the man's things, they noticed that chocolate truffles the man had packed for the one-way trip were "unusually heavy."

That's because the truffles contained a half a million dollars worth of cocaine:

"A news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection says Robert Lopera was arrested May 11 at New York's JFK Airport for attempting to smuggle 15 pounds of cocaine, some of which was hidden in knock-off Ferrero Rocher chocolate balls, and the rest in pistachio shells."

The man is currently awaiting federal prosecution, and could face "significant jail time" for the incident. And we're happy to report that in addition to being high-quality and often healthy, our toppings are 100% legal.

Want a more extreme chocolate bar? Forgo the contraband and try our Firemaker or Challenge bars.

Charity DIV Kinder Visits chocri Berlin

Author: Carmen | May 26, 2010 | Charity

I was just expecting to speak to the chocri founders Micha and Franz about some decisions coming up, but what a surprise - DIV Kinder was visiting. As you (hopefully) know, DIV Kinder is the charity organization that we donate 1% of every purchase to, and that many of you choose to donate to in addition at checkout.

create a chocolate bar and give it a name Spontaneous as we are at chocri, a quick Skype conference was held, and I got to meet the friends from DIV Kinder. They talked about how they are waiting on a container full of tools, building material for the orphanage and even an old used Pickup (on the Ivory Coast they can do a lot with a car that they sell in the Western World for 2000 bucks). In that container are also computers. This vision impressed me tremendously: the vision that computers and the education kids can get through it is as valuable as a car to transport material. We joked about sending one of our programmers over to teach the kids how to use the computers (it's funny because the programmer likes to develop a lot more than to talk - geniuses are awesome and we're so happy to have him).

We also talked about how Michael and Franz need to get to the Ivory Coast - something they had planned for January of this year and which was intercepted by the U.S. Launch. The two chocri founders are planning on actively working on the orphanage, and to see with their own eyes what's going on in the Ivory Coast. We made a conscious decision to not give the donations to a big organization (whose brand name would probably help us get publicity), but to give it to an organization where we personally know the people that are doing as much as they possibly can to make their community a better place - a community (the Ivory Coast) we care a lot about. In that light, I'm honored to have met DIV Kinder today, even if only via Skype. Just as we are passionate about making the best chocolate in the world, they are passionate to their cause, and it was wonderful to see that.

Design Your Own Sign!

Author: Carmen | May 25, 2010 | Customization

Today I'd like to introduce a mass customization company to you that allows you to create your own product on their website just as we allow you to create your own chocolate bar. Build-A-Sign lets you make your own sign or, like in our case, vinyl banner, which they then quickly make and ship to you. We had the pleasure to try them out (disclosure: for free) and made a huuuge vinyl banner to use at markets and just this past weekend at our tasting. Look at it, isn't it pretty?

chocri Vinyl Banner by Build-A-Sign

Many thanks to Build A Sign for allowing us to make a banner with them. You can choose from many pre-designs, but obviously the sexiest way to "build a banner" is to create your own - by uploading the complete design (like we did), or your own. Delivery was super fast and the quality makes me want to hang the banner over my bed.

I love seeing how mass customization is moving into B2B and how efficient this company can make signs with reduced complexity - and price! Just one more example of the co-creation revolution. All the best to Build A Sign!

We have perfected customized chocolate bars. We're getting really good at having tastings. Now we just have to figure this picture-taking thing out... Nevertheless, I of course want to share how our tasting this past weekend went!

chocri tasting at the W Hotel in New York

The W Hotel at Times Square was so kind to host us on a (busy) Saturday night. The Living Room Lounge was beautiful. We had our own corner and set up a table not only with delicious chocolate but also with our fresh-off-the-printing-press banner that Build-A-Sign made for us (a separate post on that tomorrow).

chocri founder Michael at the chocolate tasting

While we were setting up, regular guests of the lounge started coming by and checking the chocolate out, and soon a nicely sized crowd both of chocri connoisseurs and newbies was tasting our new recommended creations and meeting Michael. I'm glad everyone got to meet the inventor of design-your-own chocolate bars - as you can see in the picture on the right, he really loves his chocri bars (I know how he feels).

New Recommended Creations at the chocri chocolate tasting

We were able to share some of the new Recommended Creation concepts with you. As you know, we care a lot about Open Innovation, and in that spirit we put a few bars in front of you to get your feedback. "Pure Relaxation" was one of the favorites, "Pure Sex" will get a little more of a spicy kick to it, and the "Beautiful Skin" Chocolate Bar (loaded with toppings that are good for your skin) was a huge success as well. More on that later!

For now, thank you all for coming. We love meeting you in person, and we had a great time hanging out with you and eating chocolate. Thank you also for all your advice on creating the perfect recommended creations! More images can be found in our flickr album. Until next time!

UPDATE: The winner of the three chocolate bars from the random drawing was Andy Shaffer. Congrats!

Top 5 Bar Names!

Author: Kim | May 21, 2010 | Top-Bar-Names

Top 5 May 21
It's Friday again, all lovely and springy here in New York.

Lots of really creative combinations this week. And plenty of really clever bar names.

Here are our five favorites for this week- what's yours?

Pa-pa-pa-pucker Face
+ White Chocolate
+ Sour Cherries
+ Roasted Peanuts

Royal Darkness
+ Dark Chocolate
+ Coffee
+ Real Gold Flakes
+ Nougat
+ Candied Lilac
+ Cocoa Nibs

It's crazy, but ... ... it just might work
+ White Chocolate
+ Ginger
+ Cranberries
+ Macadamia Nuts
+ Pistachios
+ Black Sesame

Figgy Pop
+ Milk Chocolate
+ Organic Cane Sugar
+ Fig Bits
+ Bourbon Vanilla

Copy Editors'Breakfast
+ Milk Chocolate
+ Cinnamon
+ Cinnamon Cornflakes
+ Sprinkles
+ Bourbon Vanilla

File this under studies we'd like to participate in.

We've already posted about studies linking chocolate to better health and glowing skin, but this particular story caught my attention. Aussie researchers did a study to determine the effects of sweets cravings on concentration- especially for vital tasks, like driving.

As someone who has to open our website, Facebook page and Twitter feed several times a day (OMG, the background!), I am fairly familiar with this phenomenon. Often when confronted with tasty, tasty images of chocolate, distraction is a typical outcome. This study measured what happened to subjects when they really needed a chocolate fix and were stuck:

"Fighting an all-consuming desire for chocolate ice cream can have consequences ranging from memory lapses to car crashes, say scientists...

They found that volunteers whose favourite chocolate bar was unwrapped and within their reach while they sat a series of tests had slower reactions and poorer memories than those who did the same tests in a chocolate-free zone."

Hmm... you think we might see high-quality chocolate bars included in car maintenance kits any time soon? The scientists concluded:

"Although cognitive effects of individual food cravings are likely to be small, in practice even small reductions in cognitive resources have the potential to compromise optimal performance in everyday situations, thereby reducing work efficiency or increasing the likelihood of accidents."

So while the effects of a massive chocolate jones on your ability to concentrate are likely to be "small," working or driving while images of a tasty, tasty chocolate loop across your conscious mind is just as distracting as it seems. Right now, I'm being drawn by the Mexican Hot Chocolate Love Bar. Are you being distracted by chocolate today?

chocri in the News!

Author: Carmen | May 17, 2010 | CustomizationMedia

In the past week or two, a lot of publications have picked up on the (mass) customization trend - and chocri!

chocri in the New York Times
The New York Times for example had an article "Putting Customers in Charge of Design about Blank-Label, the custom dress shirts website we've told you about before. In the text, there's a mention of chocri as another example of websites that, well, put customers in charge of design. The article is a great portray of Blank-Label, and another sign that mass customization is a reality.

chocri in Mashable
Then there was the Mashable Article titled "7 Ways to Customize Your Real Life Online" by Shane Snow. Chocri is mentioned first as an example of customization, and six other exciting websites follow. Not only the article is proof that the trend is getting popular, 414 "Likes" and more than 1200 tweets about the article drive the point home, too.

chocri in VentureBeat
Just before that, VentureBeat reported about chocri, in the article "Create-your-own-chocolate-bar startup Chocri aims for US sweet tooths" by Anthony Ha. It mentions, correctly, that some retailers like Blue Nile have done customization before, but takes chocri as an example of mass customization now spreading into less obvious markets. Although I think chocolate is plenty obvious :))

chocri in ReadWriteWeb
The first ones to report on the trend though was Chris Chameron of ReadWriteWeb, asking "Is America On the Verge of A Co-Creation Invasion?". In the article, Chris writes: "This is an important concept for startups to grasp, both in the U.S. and abroad." Yes! So much has happened in the past year in terms of mass customization in the US, and we're excited to see what happens in the future. Power to the consumer!

Top 5 Bar Names of the Week

Author: Carmen | May 14, 2010 | Top-Bar-Names

Happy Friday everyone! Before I get into the top 5 chocolate bar names of the week, let me give you two visual impressions. Forgive my lack of talent as a photographer.

Chocolate Bar with the name Marquis de Seed Chocolate Bar with the name Pink Kisses

Aren't they beautiful?

That's how your bars can look, too! Here some more inspiration on what to name them:

  • SUPER STAR (Milk and White Chocolate with Pistachios and Star Decoration)
I can't help but think that whoever gives a bar like that as a gift must be a superstar

  • CocoNutty Beast (Milk Chocolate with Pecans and Coconut Shavings) and PeaNutty Beast (Milk Chocolate with Peanuts and Peanut Butter Drops) and Krispy Nutty Beast (Milk Chocolate with Toasted Hazelnuts, Rice Crispies and Bourbon Vanilla)
Ok, this is not just one name, these are multiple bars. But what a cool idea! The Nutty Beasts are having a party :)

  • NEW JERSEYYYYYYYYY (Milk and White Chocolate with Strawberry, Organic Salt Pretzels and Mini Cookies)
It comes with a fist pump included!

  • Bye-Bye Bad Breath Cocoa (Dark Chocolate with Organic Mint Leaves, Bourbon Vanilla and Cocoa Nibs)
I've never conversed with a cocoa bean closely enough to know that they have bad breath... but not once they're part of our bars!

  • Sizzling Bacon Breakfast (Dark Chocolate with Cornflakes, Organic Sesame Seeds, Imitation Bacon, Peanut Butter Drops and Sizzle Rocks)
Not our first breakfast bar in our Top 5, but our first with Bacon on it! Way to go!

And finally, not a winner in originality but in timeliness: It's graduation time!

  • Congratulations Ryan, Happy Graduation! (White Chocolate with Strawberry Chocolate Drops, Marzipan Rose, Pistachios, Rice Crispies and Raspberry)

Do you have a graduate who earned him or herself a chocolate bar? Make one now or give a gift certificate

Why Mass Customization is a Trend Now

Author: Carmen | May 13, 2010 | Customization

(originally published yesterday (May 12) on my Mass Customization Blog

Mass Customization has been preached for ages now, every time as a new ‘era’ of how things will be made. Hasn’t really happened. However, in the last year or so, we’ve seen a huge increase of mass customization companies pop up that are doing well. Customized products on the web are abound. What happened? And why now?

The reason why mass customization (or co-creation, or design-your-own) is trending again and with such force is a combination of DEMAND and CAPABILITY. I illustrated what I believe to be the causes of a recent increase in capability and demand in the image below:

Why Mass Customization is a Trend Now

Mass Customization is now easier to do (capability) and in higher demand. Reasons for that are the internet, social media, the recession and its impact on startup funding and brand loyalty, as well as the behavior of Generation Y.

DEMAND

Today, many more consumers expect to be able to design their own products.

The recession led to a strong decrease in brand loyalty (source: Reuters). A typical company lost the loyalty of more than half (!) of their customers, a lot of them (my guess) to private label. Instead of paying for a name, consumers are now hunting for value, and a product customized to your needs at a price similar to a mass produced good means increased value. At the same time, turning away from brands, consumers started to differentiate themselves more, and to start re-defining themselves. Mass Customization is a strong enabler of self-expression.

Also, Generation Y has more purchasing power now, and their often quoted “sense of entitlement” translates into their roles as consumers, too. The new consumer demands to have a product fit for their needs.

Finally, as Amy Vernon suggested to me in a conversation, social media is essentially customized/ personalized consumption of content. You have pre-selected the information that is fed to you via Twitter, Facebook etc. by choosing the people you follow. From the customization of information, it’s only a small step to the customization of other things you consume. And look at the recent growth of social media. Only a little more than one year ago, Facebook had half as many users as it does today!

In summary, an increased sense of power and desire for control by the consumer leads to a rise in demand for customized products

CAPABILITY

Today, it is much much easier to offer customized products at a fair price.

One huge reason for that is of course: The internet. Thanks to configurators on websites, what would have been an expensive consultation session 5 years ago takes only a few clicks today. Visualization of both the modules and the finished product is much easier thanks to technology.

Again, social media enhances the capability of producers to offer mass customization. Co-creation requires interaction between producer and consumer, and social media created a playing field where producer and consumer can meet and talk and get used to each other. That sets the stage and a base for a world in which consumers tell producers what they want done for them.

In my opinion, the recession also has to do with the increase of mass customization startups. The funding environment for startups dried up, and jobless graduates that turned to entrepreneurship needed to start a business that generated cash-flow quickly, and on-demand production does exactly that!

The aforementioned Generation Y is by the way not only a consumer but also often the founder of a mass customization company. People who ‘get the concept’ are now at an age where they graduated from college or grad school and are ready to go into business. And come to think of it - we (I’m one of them) were old enough to get the dot-com bubble, so as much as we believe in the internet, we like to have product that we can touch in our businesses. We are “good old” manufacturers (except that we’re not old).

I’d love to know if you can think of more/ other reasons why Mass Customization is such a hot trend right now. I think Mass Customization will be pretty hot for years to come

chocri mothers day contest

The "likes" have been tallied, and we have a winner for our chocri Mothers' Day contest!

@fullcircleadv (59 votes) Milk/White with Bourbon Vanilla, Fleur de Sel, Roasted Almonds, Caramel Chocolate Drops and Toffee

Elissar's bar (Milk Chocolate with Caramel Chocolate Drops, Sprinkles, Toffee and Mini Cookies) got so many likes, we've decided to add it to our chocri recommended creations. And since we got so much great feedback during the Mothers' Day contest, we've got another question for you all- what should we name the new chocri creation? Post it to our Facebook wall, comment below, or send us a tweet (@chocridotcom) to help us find a name for the new bar.

We really love it when our social media friends get involved, so as a thank you, we've priced the new bar at $10 instead of $11.40!

Happy Mother's Day! - To My Mom

Author: Carmen | May 9, 2010 | Festivities

Mothers hold their children's hands for a short while, but their hearts forever. ~Author Unknown
- so here's to my Mom:

I was born when my Mother was just 21. Yes, that was a surprise ;) When she learned that she was pregnant, as shocking as it was, she told my father the "great news" - and they both kept going! They both were students at that time, in an early semester (school is a little longer in Germany), and they engineered their life around, well - me. My Mom took an exam right after I was born, and my parents would rush back home after school so the other one could go back to university. Despite coming from a farm and both my parents not having a lot of money, my Mother never followed the typical advice - ditch the studies and stay by the crib of your kid. The opposite happened- having a child made her more determined to provide for it, and she graduated as one of the best in her year. By the time I went to school, we moved because she had found a job in a tech company. A manager who is now the COO of that now huge tech company soon saw that she was intelligent and hard-working, and decided to put her on a cool project because her graduation paper had been about this new invention "the CD-ROM". She is now a representative of all the Executives of that company, but what is much more important to her is that she found many friends at work throughout the years.

I am very proud of my Mom, and she sets an excellent example for a German proverb that suggest you take the stones that life puts in your path to build steps from it. She had a child at a time of her life when most people said it will mean the end of the career, and instead rejoiced about it and used it as a motivation for her career. I'm sure that without her example, I would be in a very different place today. Danke, Mama.

Come to think of it, I also want to give a little shout out to two other Moms in the chocri universe: The Mother of Franz supports chocri immensely with accounting help, and although I never had the pleasure to meet Micha's Mom, I know she's a huge chocri supporter thanks to Facebook - you've probably seen her comments on our wall before. Thanks Founders' Moms!

What do you thank your Mom for today?

p.s. Vote here for your favorite Mother's Day chocri - made by kids for their Moms! Voting ends at Midnight tonight!

p.s. II It's not too late to buy your Mom a gift certificate so she can design her own chocolate bars. ;)

What a busy week! With all the voting and sorting through entries for the Mothers' Day contest, we've had our hands full here. This week, chocri fans were getting ready for summer fun with the first two:

Circus Act: Milk Chocolate with Colorful Chocolate Dragées, Roasted Peanuts and Sprinkles;

Can't Decide at the Concession Stand: Milk and White Chocolate with Organic Salt Pretzels and Toffee;

And people were academically minded:

Life of Pi: Milk and White Chocolate with Gummy Bears, Caramel Chocolate Drops and Nougat;

We had some pun action with chocri bar naming:

Kick Ace: Milk Chocolate with Spicy Volcano Cashews, Organic Mint Leaves, Writing: "Happy Birthday!", Roasted Peanuts and Peanut Butter Drops;

And everyone was into bacon:

Crunchy Pig on Fire: Dark Chocolate with Ground Chili, Toffee and Imitation Bacon

The Mothers' Day Finalists are Up!

Author: Kim | May 5, 2010 | Contests

First, we'd like to say thank you to all our fans for tweeting and re-tweeting the details about our Mothers' Day contest, and taking time to check out the chocri interface with your very creative kids.

We've sorted through the entries, and in doing so discovered a little about how kids like to decorate their chocolate. We learned that kids seem to really like almonds, toffee and caramel chocolate drops in particular. What discerning palettes! We've selected seven finalists, and placed the entries in a Facebook album so you can vote on your favorite.

There's no rule against voting for your own child (because really, how can you resist?) and we encourage you to get friends and family to vote, too! Winners will be announced the day after Mothers' Day (May 10th), and the entry with the most "likes" by Mother's Day midnight (PST) wins. Happy voting!

Hey, everyone! We've been busy pulling together all the adorable and creative kids' chocri creations submitted over the past week.

It kind of feels like we're putting crayon artwork up on our cyber fridge. We hope everyone who has entered has had a lot of fun playing with the chocri interface, kids and parents alike. And since today's the last day to enter, we've copied and pasted our handy infographic and the entry guidelines below.

To sum it up, tweet us your entry. Or Facebook it over to us. Or e-mail me, kim@chocri.com, with your child's chocri creation. (Very sorry, but the deadlines for carrier pigeons and smoke signals have already passed.) Voting begins Wednesday, and you can tell all your Facebook friends to come over and cast a vote for your kid's creation. (The long version of the contest guidelines is below.)

Good luck!
