And The Top Five Bars This Week Are...

Author: Kim | February 25, 2011 | Top-Bar-Names

Happy Friday, everyone! Big upcoming weekend in entertainment, with the Academy Awards (or Oscars) on Sunday. We noticed two trends this week in chocolate orders- one is the number of bars ordered with written messages- was everyone feeling a bit chocolative this week?

Another is the increased frequency in bars named with "don't touch" or "hide this" themes. Are there marauding bands of personalized chocolate bar thieves to which we've not yet been made aware? I shall take this opportunity to point out that making your own bar is an excellent deterrent to chocolate thievery- who else likes white bars with pistachios and basil, huh? Here are this week's top five, which one would you award a trophy?

  • Nom Nom Bar (Dark Chocolate with Hazelnut Brittle, Fleur de Sel, Nougat and Bourbon Vanilla) Because every time you steal a chocolate bar, God kills a kitten.

  • White Out (White Chocolate with Macadamia Nuts, Caramel Pieces and Bacon) Because needs more narwhals.

  • Fruit & Fireworks (Dark Chocolate with Ginger, Cranberries, Goji Berries, Orange Pepper and Chocolate Sizzle Rocks) Because similes.

  • trey is sooooooooooooooooo getting married (Milk and White Chocolate with Caramel Chocolate Drops, Nougat, Rice Crispies in Chocolate Coating and Writing 'Just Married') Because did Trey just get proposed to?

  • Ryan's Sweet Meat (Milk Chocolate with Writing: "Happy Birthday!", Caramel Pieces, Roasted Cashews and Bacon) Because someone should keep an eye on Ryan at the Bachelor Party.

Are you having an Oscar party this weekend? What sweet treats will you be serving?

chocolate makes you happyAre you feeling a bit happier today after maybe scoring a lovely personalized chocolate bar during what may have been the chocolatiest day of the year yesterday? If you associate consuming chocolate with a better mood, you're not alone. The trope of happiness-inducing chocolate is well-entrenched in pop-culture- and example being the use of chocolate as a remedy against the guards of Azkaban (the wizard's prison) in the Harry Potter series. (JK Rowling has stated the creatures, known as Dementors, symbolize depression.)

Scientists still differ on their opinion as to whether the idea springs more from the chemical composition of chocolate, or whether the smooth texture and comforting taste of chocolate are more influential on chocolate's mood boosting effects:

But while chocolate has been proven to have some health benefits — flavonoids, for instance, are vitamin-like substances that are good for your heart — there are two schools of thought on the reason so many of us view it as a temporary escape... One points to the fact that eating chocolate stimulates the brain's production of opioids, raising levels of dopamine, which in turn triggers a neurological reward response. The other simply believes that chocolate is a comforting treat that fills the mouth with a flavor and texture you can't get from, say, a stick of celery.

What kind of chocolate do you want for Valentine's Day?

chocolate and antioxidantsIf you've picked a smoothie over a chocolate snack- reluctantly- in the past, you'll probably like the results of a new study. That's because researchers found that chocolate contains "more healthy plant compounds, gram-for-gram, than fruit juice!" Of course, you can boost the antioxidant level of your personalized chocolate bar with heart-healthy fruits and nuts, but the chocolate itself is a health powerhouse.

The study, published in the Chemistry Central Journal, dubs antioxidant-rich chocolate a "super fruit," and explains:

Lead author Dr Debra Millar and colleagues wrote: "Natural cocoa powder and dark chocolate have significantly greater TF (total flavanol) values than the other fruit powders and juices tested, respectively.

"Cocoa powder... provides nutritive value beyond that derived from its macronutrient composition. Cacao seeds should be considered a 'super fruit' and products derived from cacao seed extracts, such as natural cocoa powder and dark chocolate, as 'super foods'."

Along with antioxidants, chocolate was found to contain flavanols and polyphenols at higher levels than fruit juice. Looking for delicious chocolate that's good for you, too? You can create your own antioxidant-rich chocolate on our Create a Chocolate Bar page, or select one of our Recommended Creations, like the Beautiful Skin bar.

Topping of the Month: Organic Pumpkin Seeds!

Author: Kim | February 2, 2011 | Toppings

Pumpkin Seeds for your customized chocolate barsAs you may recall, each month, we rotate in a new, limited time only topping option so our chocri fans and friends can experience new flavor combinations along with their favorite bases and toppings. For February, we have delicious Organic Pumpkin Seeds with which you can experiment and find new and interesting chocri styles.

I have to admit, I was initially skeptical about the seeds and chocolate combo. Sure, I'd eat a seed-topped bar if one was presented, but when making my own, I tended toward the same habits. That was until I happened upon a sunflower seed and blueberry milk bar. Whoa! Seeds and chocolate pair exceptionally well, especially with dried fruits. You might want to try your Organic Pumpkin Seeds with a berry option or a chewier dried fruit, like apricots or pears when creating your customized chocolate bars.

You can find Organic Pumpkin Seeds in the Grains section on this site. What would you pair with this delightful topping?
